Vol. III, Issue 7

The mission of Santa Barbara's Channel 21 (SBTV 21) is to serve as a televised gallery of local arts, culture and education. Channel 21 is where you can find great speakers you may have missed at UCSB or SBCC, series such as The Creative Community and Nonprofit Spotlight, and exciting events at the Marjorie Luke Theatre.

SB Beautiful Awards 2009

The 45th annual Santa Barbara Beautiful Awards, “From the Mountains to the Sea,” presented in September at the Music Academy of the West can now be seen on SBTV21. Five special awards and ten property awards were featured during an evening ceremony kicked off with a pre-awards, Red Carpet interviews with Jo Ann Mermis. Emcee John Palminteri led the audience through its paces with a sense of humor and without a glitch.

Afghanistan & Pakistan - Another Vietnam?

The SB Coalition for Global Dialogue invited John Arquilla and Richard Falk for a constructive discussion on US relations with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and SBTV21 was there to record it. John Arquilla is Director of the Information Operations Center, Department of Defense Analysis, at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. His teaching and research interests include conflict in the information-age, the revolution in military affairs, and irregular warfare. Richard Falk is Professor Emeritus of International Law at Princeton University and Visiting Distinguished Professor in Global and International Studies at the UCSB. He currently serves as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian occupied territories and previously on the Independent International Commission on Kosovo. Tune in to hear opinions on where the US should go from here.

Creative Community – John Goodman

Speaking of Afghanistan, SBTV21’s popular talk show The Creative Community welcomed photographer John Goodman who has covered stories throughout the Middle East, Asia, and Europe for publications such as Newsweek, The Guardian, The Christian Science Monitor, The Independent, and the International Herald Tribune. Goodman spoke with host David Starkey about unique experiences while traveling light and fast to remote destinations, and often hostile environments. Other recent guests on The Creative Community include reviewer DJ Palladino with a top ten list of 2009 movies, performance poet Friday Lubina, and author Monte Schulz, son of the legendary Charles Schulz.

Westmont Orchestra Fall Concert

The Westmont Orchestra’s 60 student musicians celebrated their season premiere with music spanning more than two centuries at the Fall Orchestra Concert now airing on SBTV21. The concert marks an historic moment as Michael Shasberger conducts the college’s first complete student orchestra. Shasberger said he selected colorful music to allow the ensemble and soloists to shine. Popular favorites on the program include Haydn’s “Violin Concerto in C,” the overture to Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus,” “Jupiter” from Gustav Holst’s “Planets,” and Bedrich Smetana’s powerful “Moldau.”

Interview with Wayne Rosing

SBCC's Scheinfeld Center offers another intriguing program for SBTV21 viewers. A casual chat with Wayne Rosing, former head of engineering at Google, focuses on Design and Innovation. This is a rare opportunity to access the inner workings of a true innovator who helped create the distinctive Google environment. Wayne Rosing has been a key player in several landmark projects in the computing industry. In the early 1980s he was a director of engineering at Apple Computer, then went on to become Vice President of Engineering at Sun Microsystems.
